In accordance with the standard production system of SLC, the experimental animals of SLC are produced with stringent microbiological and genetic control under certain environmental standards, and then monitored periodically to assure that each product maintain its characteristic.
The report of microbiological tests is issued once every month.
The report of genetic tests is issued once every year.

With the aim of producing ewell characterized and uniform experimental animalse,we undertake maintenance and production of well defined strains of experimental animals under the standard production system including stringent microbiological and genetic control.

  • Maintained and produced by the cyclic mating system
  • Foundation stock coloniesFThe eseed stocke of each strain is maintained and produced by brother-to-sister mating.
  • Multiplication colonies: Animals from stock colonies are multiplied by brother- to-sister mating to produce production colony animals and F1 production animals.
  • Production colonies:FThese colonies consist of animals from multiplication colonies and they are multiplied by non-brother-to-sister mating to produce laboratory animals to be used for experiments.
  • Stock animals from each inbred multiplication colony are cross-bred to produce F1 animals

(1) The microbiological monitoring is executed based on the pathogen diagnostics of the microbiological monitoring manual of SLC. When abnormality is seen while monitoring it, we will execute the inspection that seems to be necessary it.

The following tests are periodically performed:
Quality tests for drinking water,setting microbe tests as an indicator of microbiological cleanliness
of the environmental air,and function tests of the high pressure and ethylene gas sterilizers to guarantee aseptic conditions of the instruments and apparatuses to be used.

Production efficiency of each production colony is monitored and recorded in weekly report. Husbandry technicians at work try to observe animals carefully to detect any abnormality in behavior at an early stage.

Mouse Inbred StrainsERat Inbred strains
Genetic monitoring is carried out at least once a year for inbred mouse and rat strains.
The test items are as follows
1.Biochemical markers
EDetection of isozyme and protein variants using electrophoretic mobility or enzymatic activity.
2.Immunogenetic markers
EDetection of the various H2K and H2D (the major histocompatibility complex in the mouse) alleles using cytotoxicity test.
RT1.A(the major histocompatibility complex in the rat) alleles are tested by Devision of Genetics,ICLAS Monitoring Center.
3.Microsatellite markers
EDetection of polymorphisms of microsatellite DNA using PCR method.
4.Mutant genes in spontaneous mutants
EConfirmation of mutant genes(Faslpr and Faslgld) using PCR or PCR-RELP method.
Sample number for each test item:
3 males and 3 females/strain
All tests are in accordance with the Genetic monitoring SOP of Japan SLC,Inc.
